Where Can You Use Agentic Commerce Today? A 2026 Reality Check

As of March 2026, agentic commerce is live in production across three major platforms in the United States, with global expansion planned throughout the year. This is no longer a prototype or announcement — real consumers are completing real purchases through AI agents.

Google AI Mode + UCP

Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) at the National Retail Federation conference in January 2026. UCP-powered checkout is embedded in Google’s AI Mode, allowing AI agents to discover products, compare options, and complete purchases from eligible U.S. merchants.

In March 2026, Google added cart support — agents can now save or add multiple items to a shopping cart from a single store, matching the natural shopping behavior of adding several items before checkout.

Endorsed by: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Shopify, Stripe, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Etsy, Wayfair, Macy’s, The Home Depot, Flipkart, and Adyen.

ChatGPT Shopping (OpenAI)

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) built with Stripe. U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users can buy directly from Etsy sellers in the chat interface.

However, OpenAI has pivoted. The company found Instant Checkout didn’t offer the flexibility it wanted and shifted to letting merchants build dedicated apps within ChatGPT. Product discovery remains organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance.

Shopify Agentic Storefronts

Shopify merchants can expose their catalog and checkout flow to AI agents through Shopify’s integration with ChatGPT. This means the merchant’s existing Shopify infrastructure — product data, inventory, checkout, fulfillment — becomes accessible to AI shopping agents without the merchant building custom integrations.

What Types of Purchases Work

AI agents handle purchases best when products have structured, machine-readable data with clear specifications. Current strongest categories:

  • Consumer electronics — Clear specs, model numbers, standardized attributes
  • Apparel with defined sizing — Size charts, material specs, color variants
  • Household goods — Dimensions, compatibility data, delivery windows
  • Food delivery — Menu items, dietary attributes, real-time availability
  • Books, media, digital goods — Fully structured metadata

Complex purchases requiring subjective judgment (luxury goods, real estate, custom services) remain primarily human-driven, though agents can assist with research and comparison.

What’s Coming Next

UCP global expansion is planned throughout 2026. Visa and Mastercard are both deploying agent payment protocols for mainstream adoption. As Microsoft’s retail blog put it: agentic commerce is becoming the new front door to retail.
